Training:

What does it look like and who is it for?

Joyful Training to Improve Equine Welfare

  • What I Offer

I offer positive reinforcement training for husbandry behaviors, groundwork, and riding, with a focus on developing emotional and physical balance and long term soundness. We can build joyful interactions that are fun for you and your horse, whether on the ground or riding. I also offer lessons for people using gentle pressure and release training, who are interested in improving their horse's welfare through a thoughtful progression based in Classical Dressage. For horses with trauma and challenging or dangerous behaviors, I use methods that are safe and enjoyable for horse and handler, adhering to the Humane Hierarchy to ensure I am using the most ethical methods available. https://iaabc.org/hierarchy

  • Who is it for?

I offer lessons to people who want to improve the welfare of their horse through training. If you have an older horse or a horse with physical issues, this is a great way for you to continue to build a deeper relationship with your horse through meaningful interactions. I also teach people who want to ride using an ethical approach that focuses on equine welfare and long term soundness. For people who compete or ride traditionally, adding positive reinforcement training exercises that focus on balance, weight shifts, and flexibility can be a fun way to add variety, improve your work in the arena, and build a better connection with your horse.

I also love working with children who are interested in learning about all aspects of horse care and ethical training.

  • What are the Benefits?

Horses are not here to serve us, nor are they here to be our mirrors or therapists. They have their own needs, emotions, and complex lives that we can never truly understand without being a horse.

That being said, I believe we can have the best of both worlds. The training I do is fun for the horse. They eagerly wait their turn to play! It also helps meet the horses' needs for physical and mental enrichment- a big challenge for our domestic horses. Classical dressage and other physical therapy programs enable us to use movement to heal the horse. By focusing on physical and mental health, our horses can feel calm and comfortable in their bodies for years to come.

And... it is also fun for the human! Horses can choose to be ridden, and choose to interact with us. Whether you are on the ground or riding, you can pursue your dreams to have precise, thoughtful communication with your horse, to dance with your horse, or to simply enjoy walks together in nature. Your horse can be your partner who actively and happily participates in their care and training.

For all horses and humans, I focus on balance, relaxation, mindfulness, and joy. I am forever a learner, and strive to share that joy with my fellow humans and horses.
